Why Is Deck Staining Essential for Restoration and Protection?
Chicago’s extreme weather takes a toll on outdoor spaces, and your deck is no exception. Constant exposure to rain, snow, and harsh sunlight can cause wood to fade, crack, and deteriorate over time. That’s why deck staining is a crucial step in any deck restoration project—it not only enhances the look of your deck but also protects it from the elements.
While some may confuse staining with painting, the two are very different. Deck staining allows the natural beauty of the wood grain to show through while providing a protective seal against moisture, UV rays, and wear and tear. Unlike paint, which can peel and trap moisture, a high-quality stain penetrates the wood, preserving its strength and extending its lifespan—especially on high-traffic deck boards.
How we stain and restore decks one step at a time.
The deck staining process varies depending on factors like wood type, age, and previous treatments. A properly stained deck not only boosts curb appeal but also ensures durability for years to come. That’s why we always recommend staining over painting—giving your wood deck the protection and long-lasting beauty it deserves!

Step 1.
Timing Is Everything
The best time to stain your deck is when temperatures are moderate (above 55°F, but below 95°F), humidity is low to average, and no rain is forecasted. Ideally, you should have two to four consecutive dry days before starting.
Step 2.
Proper Surface Preparation
Proper surface preparation is key. Depending on the condition of your wood:
- New wood: Use Brightener and Neutralizer to remove mill glaze.
- Unfinished wood: Use Multi-Purpose Cleaner to prepare for staining and remove mold/mildew.
- Maintained finished wood: Use Multi-Purpose Cleaner for regular touch-ups.
- Weathered/mildewed wood: Use Wood Restorer to clean; follow with Brightener and Neutralizer.
- Tannin-rich woods: Use Alkyd Primer to control tannin bleeding with solid stains.
Pressure wash all chemicals off, and ensure wood dries above 55°F before staining.
Step 3.
Choosing a Stain Color and Opacity
Select the right stain color based on the desired opacity:
- Natural/Translucent: Shows full wood beauty.
- Transparent: Tints wood, grain and texture visible.
- Semi-transparent: Enhances with color, some grain visible.
- Semi-solid: Colors wood, some grain visible.
- Solid: Masks grain, texture visible.
Step 4.
For Older Decks
If your deck was previously stained with a solid wood stain, you cannot switch to stains with lower opacity.
Step 5.
Deck Staining & Sealing
Remove planters, hoses, furniture, and light fixtures. Stain vertical sections (rails and posts) first to avoid drips on finished areas. Complete the job with the best results.
Inspect Your Deck Before Staining or Sealing
Before staining or sealing, inspect your deck for rotten boards and assess its structural integrity. In some cases, deck restoration may be necessary to ensure a safe and long-lasting finish. For the best results, it’s recommended to have a professional carpenter handle the restoration process, as improper repairs can lead to costly mistakes and further damage.
When to Seal Your Deck: Timing Matters
For new decks and porches, sealing too soon can backfire. Cedar decks need about 6 months, while treated lumber requires a year for preservatives to settle. Plus, sealing damp wood can cause uneven absorption and fading. That’s why we measure moisture levels before sealing or staining—ensuring a long-lasting, even finish.
Signs Your Deck Needs Resealing
For older decks, watch for signs like water absorption, fading color, or grayish boards—these mean it’s time for deck restoration and resealing. If water beads on the surface, your deck is still protected. We recommend resealing every 2 to 4 years, while vertical surfaces like fences and siding typically need it every 4 to 6 years. Keep your deck looking great and well-protected with regular maintenance!

I would definitely recommend them.
